EVENT COMPETITION Information
Competition Descriptions & Entries
-
All four competitions replicate real-life situations that happen while out gathering cattle in the open range.
All contestants are judged on the highest levels of competency, horsemanship, stockmanship & ability to read the herd.
-
New to BTG, the BBHC will feature the finest ranch bridle horses in the country.
These are not simply“show“ horses, they are horses that have gone through the formal “jaquima to fern” bridle-development process and earn their keep as working ranch horses.
A finished horse responds to the slightest movement of the rider’s hand, foot, or body, allowing horse and rider to work cattle and perform precise maneuvers as one.
This is a reata-only (traditional hand-braided rawhide rope) show that will truly test the skills of the horse and rider.
It highlights horsemanship, stockmanship, and cattle handling. skills of a rider and their bridle horse in a 3-part competition.
Dry Work: Complete a pattern in the arena that utilizes spins, lead changes, and different loping speeds.
Rodear Sorting: Sort out designated cattle out of the rodear one by one, and drive them to a designated area.
2-Man Roping: The final cow must be sorted out of the rodear must be roped and doctored. Contestant will head the cow and the unjudged support roper will heel.
-
The 3-Man Open Roping is our original main competition that inspired it all.
Thirty 3-person teams compete in a 4-part big loop roping designed to test their Buckaroo skills & teamwork. Points are progressive (each round’s score is added into their score) and teams are eliminated until the top 4 teams compete in the final round.
1st Round: Calf Doctoring (30 teams)
All 30 teams are required to sort, and doctor 3 specifically-numbered calves in the rodear.
2nd Round: Sort and Rope (16 teams)
The top 16 teams are required to sort, rope, and doctor 3 specifically-numbered calves in the rodear. Each team member must complete a successful head-catch.
3rd Round: Sort & Rope (8 teams)
Top 8 teams must first sort two specifically-numbered cattle out of the rodear and take them to the other end of the arena and load them in the '“pen.” Teams must then work the 3rd specifically-number animal out of the rodear, take it past the chalk line and doctor it.
4th Round: Greatest Buckaroos Cow Doctoring (Top 4 teams)
With at minimum of 18-foot loops, teams must sort, rope, and doctor 2 identified cows consecutively.
-
This competition was created to honor the late Toni Schutte, the woman who did it all and inspired everyone.
Toni was a mother, a grandmother, a rancher, a camp cook, an award winning roper, and one heck of a hand.
Our 2-Man Mixed Doctoring is a nod to all of the women and families that make significant contributions to the Buckaroo world, but often go unacknowledged.
It is also an opportunity for our young Buckaroos to show off their talents!
Adults division
At least 1 team member must be a woman. Teams must rope and doctor 2 cattle out of the rodear. Both team members must head and heel one each.
Youth Division
At least 1 team member must be at least 15 or younger. Teams must rope and doctor 2 cattle out of the rodear. Youth are not required to head-catch.
-
This competition is designed to replicate real range situations that every true Buckaroo has experienced—being alone outside and having to doctor an animal without any help.
There is a Mens and a Women’s Division. All competitors are required to sort, lay down, and doctor specifically-numbered cattle all on their own.
